Movies Based on famous Plays

I have been looking for some movies that are based on well-known plays. So far I could find only these:

Macbeth [English] - Maqbool [Hindi] -Throne of Blood [Japanese]
Hamlet Othello [English] - Kaliyattam [Malayalam] - Omkara [Hindi]
King Lear[English] - Gunasundari Katha [Telugu] - Ran [Japanese]
Romeo and Juliet [English]- Reshma Aur Shera [Hindi]- Chicken Rice War [Chinese]
Midsummer Night’s Dream - Oh My Goddess[Japanese]
Antony and Cleopatra [English] - Kannaki [Malayalam]
Comedy of Errors[English]- Angoor [Hindi]- Ulta Palta [Telugu]
Hamlet [English] - Gamlet [Russian] - Kadamayin Ellai [Tamil] -Khoon Khoon [Hindi]-Hamlet Goes Business in the USA[Finnish]- The Bad Sleep Well [Japanese]
Glass Menagerie [English] -Akale [Malayalam]

Can anyone help me with more of these? And the list need not be restricted to Shakespeare or English. It would also be helpful if you can tell me where are these movies available.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks Vroom, but I’m looking precisely for plays and dramas that were made into movies. Devdas and Parineeta were novels.

there was one based on one of chekhov’s plays ‘The Inspector general’, in Hindi starring Dev Anand by his brother Chetan Anand.
There were more than one on ‘The taming of the Shrew’ in Hindi including ‘Ziddi’.. There was ‘Man Pasand’ based on Shaw’s ‘Pygmalion’(My Fair Lady’). King Lear was also made into a Telugu movie starring Nazar recently. Ray’s ‘Ganashatru’ in Bengali was based on Ibsen’s ‘An enemy of the people’. Elia Kazan’s “who’s afraid of Virginia Woolf’ was also based on a play of the same name starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.. Woody Allen made a movie based on ‘A Midsummer’s Night’s dream’..can’t recall the name. Another version starring Michelle Pffeifer was also made recently.. ‘The Tempest’ was also made into a movie starring Richard Burton.. Ibsen’s ‘Doll’s House’ was also made into an English movie. Sohrab Modi had made “Doll’s House’ in Hindi…with Nirupa Roy, I think..called ‘Jailor’. Most of Sohrab Modi’s historical/period films were based on Parsi Theatre adaptations of popular plays.. ‘Wait Until Dark’ starring Audrey Hepburn was also written as a play originally.. Some Agatha Christie plays like “mousetrap’ etc., were also made into movies.. those are some i can recall at the moment..

  8. Smrti says:

    Bindu,
Yes…………I would include KPAC movies also. thanks.

  9. bindu says:

i am sure you know this. “omkara”

  10. Sunitha says:

“Kaliyattam” and “Omkara” are based on OTHELLO not Hamlet. I remember seeing a recent version of Tempest (not the one staring Richard Burton). Julius Ceasar could be another such movie(don’t have much details, sorry).

  11. sunitha says:

“The Glass menagerie” and “The Crucibles” have also been made into movies with the same name. “The Crucibles” has Venona Ryder in it.

  12. smrti says:

Yes Sunitha, Kaliyattam and Omkara are adaptations of Othello, not Hamlet. Sorry for the mix up.
Is the recent Tempest you mentioned directed by Jack Bender in 1998. If not, I would like to get the details of that. And yes, Glass menagerie and Crucible are also made into movies. Glass menagerie is made into a Malayalam movie also - Akale.

A thousand acres - Based on King Lear.

  14. Kay says:

It was Nikolai Gogol’s play ‘Revizor’ later ‘The Inspector General’ which was made in Hollywood starring Danny Kaye. Dev Anand made ‘Afsar’ based on ‘Inspector General’directed by Chetan Anand.

  15. smrti says:

Thanks Kay for That piece of information on a Kaye movie

  16. Sujit Mahapatra says:

    just to add
Since you are looking at adaptations of plays, Why don’t you try the Hollywood musicals. Most of them were adaptations of Broadway hits such as My Fair lady, Sound of Music, Chicago, you name it. In fact, if you have noticed, Ron Howard, a director of plays, directed Chicago as his first film. IF you watch it, it appears as if he has filmed the play itself in the way in which he uses the spotlights and advances the narrative.

    bye

  17. rohini says:

Peter Greenaway made “Prospero’s Books” based on Tempest

  18. smrti says:

Thanks Rohini, for that comment. I have heard that Prospero’s Books is quite a good movie. Any idea where a copy of it be available?

  19. Marcus says:

    Hi Smrti,

When you say you’ve found these films, do you mean you’ve actually found copies? I’m looking for _Khoon Ka Khoon_, _Gunasundari Katha_ and _Kaliyattam_, and if you could tell me where to find any of those I’d be very grateful.

    Thanks.

    Marcus,
No. I dont have copies of these movies. Kaliyattam is a very popular movie in kerala, I’m sure its copies are available in any of the lending libraries there.

  21. Charanpreet says:

I dont know if this is still active - I just stumbled upon this while doing my own research on Hindi films based on plays - well, all of Oscar Wilde’s plays (at least the major ones) have been made into films multiple times - The Importance of being Ernest and An ideal husband are post 2000 films with impressive casts.
